Name: Helen Magnus Door: Canon: Sanctuary Canon Point: Age: 274 Appearance: linkHistory: linkPersonality: PRIVATE. Helen is an incredibly private woman. Whilst she does have friends and people that she trusts the amount that each person knows differs exactly based on who they are and how much she trusts them, with even people that work closely with her or have even known her for decades don't actually know as much about her as they think. Some of this is for necessity, with the line of work that Helen's in she's very protective of her patients whilst some is simply a matter of fact about her life -- after living for so long she finds it hard to connect with people, making her distant and avoidant with her life being one that no one in their right mind would really believe.
LOYAL. If you're someone that Helen cares for she will express incredibly loyalty towards you and should someone try to harm one of her friends or someone she protects they'll realise that it was a very grave mistake. Helen would go to all ends for people that she cares dearly about, having even refused to believe that her daughter was dead despite the evidence, trying crazy strategy after strategy to try and find some way of saving her. Even with people that have hurt Helen in the past, she does want to still try and trust them (to an extent) or believe in their capacity for change if they show such willingness, a prime example of this being John Druitt -- despite his actions as Jack the Ripper Helen still cared for him and tried to help him when he wasn't well, not wanting to still lose him. As well as being protective over people's lives she is also protective over their beliefs or interests. Helen has long understood the personal dangers of the job, the lack of being able to communicate it to others and allows her staff the relaxation and personal time that they so need. Her protective nature is also very compassionate and though it may be hard for Helen to relate to others she does truly try.
UPTIGHT. Despite her kindness and how much she cares about people, Helen is a little bit of a stickler for rules and etiquette. Raised a Victorian woman Helen learned a lot about how women were supposed to act, something that she followed to an extent, railing against it when it stopped her personal ambitions but being careful to never go too far over a line, not when it could impact on others (her father or friends). Whilst Helen has seen the world change and much of this propriety loosen there are still things that Helen takes pride in (how she carries herself, still with a stiff back and manners) and the manners of those around her, insisting on proper introductions, gracious welcomes into homes and simple politeness, commenting if it doesn't fit. In her work, Helen employs some strict sensibilities which aide in protecting both her work and her patients. While she may not relax often, and only takes a weekend-long break every seven years, Helen does know how to relax and enjoy herself. She knows how to make light of a situation and has a distinctive sense of humour, though it's only seen when the time is appropriate. She also employs a strong "do no harm" ethic due to her status as a medical doctor and her wish to protect any abnormal and person. She is unwilling to harm or even kill any individual without a spectacularly good reason, often placing her own life in danger above that of whom she would rather save, an example of this being John Druitt whom she has tried to save for over a century despite his actions towards herself and others.
CALM. Even when things are difficult or tense Helen keeps a very calm head, trying to think logically about a situation rather than overreacting and it takes a lot of stress or pressure for Helen to lose control. Some of her calm attitude stems from her Victorian sensibilities whilst the rest comes through practice and patience, having been thrown into enough dangerous situations that it takes a lot for Helen to be phased by what is happening. Outside of danger, Helen is equally calm, kind and caring with her patients, soothing of their worries and a good ear to talk to even if she may struggle to relate.
PROUD. Helen is an incredibly proud woman, something that she has been ever since she was a young girl. One thing that Helen prides herself on most is her knowledge and skills, as along with day to day life she requires them for her work. She is also proud of them because they are statements of what she has accomplished in life and her dedication to what she does. Helen is dedicated not only to her work but also to those that are involved in it. It is her job to protect not only her patients but those that she works with. She is also incredibly stubborn and has admitted that she is incredibly used to getting her own way, and it has been mentioned that there hasn't been a compromise that she hasn't just steamrollered through. By having worked independently for so long (despite the government funding) Helen has been able to act for herself and built up the Sanctuary Network through her determination. An example of this is when Helen first studied to become a doctor. Despite having the knowledge, skill and becoming licensed the Royal College refused to allow Helen to practise medicine, although that did not cease Helen nor her quest to become a practising doctor. Helen requested that her father share his work with her and began to help him research, later legally practising medicine after further laws changed and she was permitted to do so.
DISTANT. Although Helen doesn't regret her actions that brought about her longevity there are many things in her life and many actions that she has taken that she does regret. She has commented that in her life she has taken many risks, but after having to 'watch' her life for 113 years (after travelling back in time), this has allowed her to see that not all of the decisions that she has made were the best choices. Due to Helen's extended life, she has seen the world change many times and knows that she will again, making it very difficult for her to relate to the people around her with having experienced so much. Though she keeps herself apprised of global affairs, mainly to protect the abnormal community, Helen herself is less involved with them than she was in past years. Political affairs also hold less of an interest to Helen and, unless she is specifically asked, she will keep away from them. Whilst Helen does have friends, people that she trusts and cares about she even keeps them at a distance, having lost too many people for her to want to get particularly close to anyone, even having spent time trying to find an end to her extended lifespan. Powers and Abilities: LONGEVITY. Helen's abnormality grants her an extended lifespan and youthful appearance. Awakened due to injection of a serum (derived from vampire blood) Helen also possesses a heightened immune system, increased intellect and heightened durability. As her longevity is in her blood, which contains vampiric properties, her blood is capable of extending the lifespan of others. Despite the vampiric properties in her blood Helen is still human (human abnormal). MEDICINE. Originally completing her training in Oxford, Helen is an accomplished doctor who specialises in xenobiology, cryptozoology and teratology. Spending over three lifetimes as a doctor she is familiar with most areas of medicine, having treated both human and abnormal patients at her Sanctuary. She also has great skill in chemistry. LINGUISTICS. she is fluent in English, Italian, Zulu, Japanese, Cambodian, Norweigian, French, German, Spanish, Latin and is also able to understand Arabic, Hindi (Urdu). She is also able to read and translate Cuneiform, Sanguine Vampiris script, and Praxian lexicon, and has knowledge of other non-verbal communication (including sign language, morse code and military signals). COMBAT. though Helen favours non-lethal methods of weaponry, such as stunners and tranquilisers, she possesses skill in hand-to-hand combat and is familiar with various types of weaponry, both traditional and experimental. She is a capable fighter, quick at thinking on her feet and using her surroundings to her advantage, and is more durable than an ordinary human. TECHNOLOGY. seeing technology develop through the years Helen is incredibly tech-savvy and can use and repair both analogue and digital devices, as well as perform piggy-back hacks. She is also able to recreate devices that she has spent minimal time working with, such as stunner weapons and a time node. Inventory: Samples: |
